Rhondda Cynon Taf Council has confirmed all former service men and women living in RCT can access free swimming and aquatics classes – and enjoy discounted all-inclusive leisure access for them and their families.
The initiative for veterans forms part of the Council’s wider commitment to supporting those who have served, or are serving, their country as set out in its Community Covenant.
It is also yet further demonstration of its efforts to inspire healthier communities by offering flexible, affordable and convenient leisure access at a range of modern, well-equipped facilities.
Veterans who are members of the free Armed Forces Discount scheme will automatically be eligible for free swimming and aquatics classes (including Aqua Aerobics and swimming lessons) at all Rhondda Cynon Taf Council Leisure Centres and Swimming Pools. Join the Armed Forces Discount Scheme for free.
Welsh Government funding has enabled the free swim initiative, already currently offered to under-16s during school holidays and over 60s at all time – to be extended to include Veterans.
To complement this, the Council has also decided to extend its Corporate Leisure for Life Membership to Veterans and their families, again dependent on membership of the Armed Forces Discount Scheme.
This means they and their family can enjoy unlimited access to gym, swim, classes and indoor sports at Rhondda Cynon Taf Council Leisure Centres for just £26.25 each.
Cllr Ann Crimmings, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, Leisure and Sport, represented the county borough at the national launch of the Free Swim for War Veterans.
She said: “As part of our long-standing Community Covenant to support serving members of the armed forces, we have offered free Leisure for Life membership for serving men and women, including reserves, for some years.
“There were representations from Veterans who were keen to access discounted Leisure access.
“When Welsh Government confirmation of the free swim and aquatics classes was announced, we felt it was a good opportunity to complement that initiative with a discounted Leisure for Life membership, open to all veterans, including reservists, and their families.
“This is a membership which can be enjoyed as often as you like in any of our centres and swimming pools.
“As we deliver a leisure investment programme which has seen the opening of the new Sobell Leisure Centre in Aberdare, the refurbishment of the Gym at Hawthorn Leisure Centre, the ongoing improvements to create a new gym at Bronwydd Pool and planned future investment in Abercynon and Rhondda Sports Centre, there never has been a better time to take advantage of Leisure for Life Membership.”
Prices have been fixed for the second year running on Leisure for Life memberships that are paid annually in advance or by committed direct debit membership.
There are concessions on offer for junior (under 16) and senior (over 60) members as well as those on qualifying benefits.
The Corporate Leisure for Life membership which is to be enjoyed by veterans and their families can be accessed by any group, organisation and company as long as there is a minimum of five people committed to a 12 month membership. This includes sports teams, businesses or local organisations.
