The Council has commenced work to replace the footbridge between Dyfodwg Street and River Terrace in Treorchy – using Welsh Government funding to provide an upgraded Active Travel bridge for pedestrians and cyclists.

The scheme got underway from Thursday, August 19, to remove the current 1.5-metre wide footbridge and provide a 3.5-metre wide replacement, which conforms to Welsh Government’s Active Travel guidance. The Council has appointed Walters Ltd as the contractor responsible for delivering the scheme.

The work is scheduled to last for 12 weeks, and the footpath over the river will remain closed throughout. A local diversion route for pedestrians and cyclists is signposted. The Council’s contractor may also require minor localised road closures for elements of the work, which will be communicated to residents if necessary.

The scheme is wholly funded by Welsh Government, being delivered thanks to a £330,000 grant allocation via its Active Travel Fund.

Councillor Andrew Morgan, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and Cabinet Member with responsibility for Highways and Transportation, said: “The Council has welcomed important funding from Welsh Government to deliver a new Active Travel bridge in Treorchy, ensuring there is a suitable shared walking and cycling route at this location. Schemes like these intend to improve the local Active Travel provision, and are targeted within our communities.

“Active Travel has numerous benefits, and the Council has a key role to play in encouraging more people to walk or cycle as part of their daily routines – whether accessing employment or education, or as a leisure activity. Active Travel is important for people’s health and well-being, and is integral to our Climate Change commitments in encouraging alternative travel to driving.

“The Council will work closely with its contractor to deliver the new bridge in Treorchy as quickly and efficiently as possible. Work got underway on site on Thursday, with a local diversion route now in place for pedestrians and cyclists. Thanks in advance to the community for your cooperation.”
