The Imperial Bridge repair and refurbishment scheme in Porth is now entering its final stages and is due to be finished this week – taking advantage of the fair weather that is forecast, to complete final work to the road surface.
The structure, which carries a section of Pontypridd Road, has required two large phases of repair work to rectify damage and install future protections. Phase One took place in 2022, completing significant steelwork and parapet repairs, paintwork, and the replacement of the southern-side bridge bearings. Phase Two has been progressed since April 2023, and has replaced the northern-side bridge bearings and carried out remedial work to a wingwall.
The latest site activity by the Council’s appointed contractor, Centregreat Ltd, has been to waterproof the bridge deck. Following a break in the recent poor weather, which was essential for this element of the scheme, all waterproofing work was completed by the contractor on Monday, November 20.
Final carriageway resurfacing and white lining at the bridge section of Pontypridd Road is now being progressed, and the overall scheme is on course to be completed by Friday, November 24. This remains subject to the generally dry weather conditions that are forecast for this week.
Once the road has been reopened, the Council will put arrangements in place to revert the local bus timetables back to normal – working with local operators to do this at the earliest opportunity. The temporary Sunday shuttle bus service between Llwyncelyn Road and Porth Town Centre will no longer operate.
The Imperial Bridge scheme has been funded by an allocation for Highways Structures in the Highways Capital Programme. The Council would like to thank residents for their patience and cooperation throughout the works – which were essential to repair and future-proof this important structure.
