Following the successful installation of the new footbridge on the weekend of 14th / 15th October, the Council can now provide a further update on the next steps of the scheme.
The Council’s contractor is now finishing off the approaches to the footways and this should be completed next week enabling the footbridge to reopen. Some temporary infill panels will be used to fill the gap between the two bridges until the permanent infill arrangements have been agreed with Network Rail.
In addition, the construction of a new pedestrian crossing on the A473 Bridgend Road (near High Street) will commence on Monday, 30th October and continue for approximately 4 weeks. This element of the scheme consists of a new puffin crossing - including traffic signals, footway alterations, carriageway resurfacing and road markings. Some localised drainage repairs will also be carried out in advance of the carriageway resurfacing.
The crossing will need to be constructed under four-way traffic lights due to the junctions with Hillside Avenue and Danygraig Road, but to minimise disruption the traffic signals will only be in operation during off-peak times (after 09:30am and removed from the highway by 15:00pm) and these will avoid peak hour traffic.
A full weekend road closure will be required to resurface the road from the junction with Hillside Avenue (south to the footbridge) with some additional resurfacing to the first 30 metres of Chapel Road. A suitable diversion route will be provided for and a shuttle bus service will be provided for local bus operators where effected and the Council will communicate further details for these arrangements shortly.
