Diana Brockway's 'Threads' exhbition
Work by one of Wales’ best-loved contemporary quilt makers, Diana Brockway, can now be seen at the Cynon Valley Museum and Gallery, Aberdare.
Diana, whose award-winning work has been widely exhibited around the world, retired in 1987 after 25 years of teaching Art, only to discover she had Parkinson’s disease.
This was a severe jolt to her confidence and many of her well-laid plans faltered. Diana joined a patchwork and quilting class as a therapy and before long, this pastime became a major part of her life.
Many influences for her work are derived from personal observations and extensive travelling has led to the creation of many pieces. One of her sons, Harry, a master carver and wood engraver, has also had a great influence on her work.
For the exhibition at Cynon Valley Museum and Gallery, entitled Threads, Diana has grouped her work into a number of themes and categories including Art and Artists, Abstract Interpretations, Architecture, Landscapes and Landforms.
The quilts have frequent threads of technique, style and inspiration and between the different groups, there are threads and connections. Threads can be viewed until Saturday, June 2, 2012.
