Rhondda Cynon Taf Mayor, Cllr Sylvia Jones, congratulates winning team captain Wayne Pearson

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Charity Bowling Night, in aid of the Mayor’s Appeal, has been hailed as a great success.

A grand total of 10 teams battled it out for the coveted top spot during the fundraising event held at Bowlplex, Nantgarw.

Mayor, Cllr Sylvia Jones, said she was overwhelmed and ‘bowled over’ by the tremendous support.

“I would like to thank Bowlplex for allowing us to use their fantastic facilties, as well as each and every one of the players who made up the 10 teams competing,” she said.

“It was a wonderful night of fundraising, with £450 being presented to me on the night in aid of the Mayor’s Appeal.

All proceeds raised on the night will go to the Mayor’s chosen charities, which this year are Viva Wales; RCT Crossroads; Rhondda Powerhouse Trust; Rhondda Operatic Society; GTFM Community Radio; Colstars Youth Theatre.

The winning team was the Strategy, Public Relations and Tourism team of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council, consisting of Greg Rees, Wayne Pearson, Ian Christopher, Alun Huish and Jack Brown. They each won a £10 Bowlplex voucher.

In second place was the GTFM team, followed by Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Services for Young People team in third place.

The next charity event in aid of the Rhondda Cynon Taf Mayor’s Appeal is a Zumba-thon, which takes place at Rhondda Sports Centre, Gelligaled Park, Ystrad, on Saturday, May 12, from 1pm until 5pm.

Zumba, a Latin-inspired dance fitness programme incorporating hip-hop, samba, salsa, merengue, mambo, martial arts and belly dance moves, is a popular leisure activity at Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Leisure Centres.

Refreshments will be provided on the day and a prize draw will take place, with some fantastic prizes up for grabs.

The four-hour Zumba-thon will be a massive calorie-burning fitness party as well as a marathon fundraiser. The party is open to all ages and is suitable for beginners to the more experience Zumba dancers.

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Leisure for Life campaign aims to get people of all ages active and undertaking exercise in a bid to improve their health and wellbeing.

It is all about talking simple steps to make exercise part of your daily routine and reaping the benefits alongside potential weight loss, enhanced fitness, muscle gain or even improved socialisation.
