Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council is committed to encouraging innovation and supporting existing companies that want to grow, as well as helping those planning to move to the area.

The Council offers a business support package to help you realise your full potential. Whether you have an idea for a business start-up, wish to expand an existing business in the area, improve your efficiency or introduce some new technology, there could be support for you.

The Council is able to offer grants when funding allows, however, these schemes are discretionary and may have restricted eligibility. Below outlines the grants that are offered by the Council.

Business Support Grant

Aim: The Business Support Grant is a new flexible grant scheme aimed at new and existing small to medium sized businesses to develop their growth potential. The grant can provide financial support to assist with the purchase of equipment, development of marketing materials and improve commercial premises.

Who can apply: Consumer facing businesses which are based within the Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough.

Applicants will need to demonstrate that they have an ability to 'add value' or offer net benefits to the local economy (through job creation).

What can it fund: Eligible capital projects which could include:

  • Capital Equipment
  • ICT Equipment
  • Development of websites
  • Design and production of one off marketing materials
  • External and internal building works and alterations (Commercial Properties Only) 

N.B. Expenditure incurred before grant approval is not eligible for funding.

How much: Grants are available from £1,000 up to £1,500, based on 50% of the eligible project costs. For businesses based in commercial premises grants are available from £1,000 up to £3,000, based on 50% of the eligible project costs.

Town Centre Building Improvement Grant

Aim: The Town Centre Building Improvement Grant scheme can provide financial support to assist with the regeneration of existing commercial business premises within eight of the County Borough's main town centres. The grant can help in adapting premises for new business uses, improve existing premises, or bring vacant commercial property back into use. The grant is available to businesses based within designated commercial improvement area boundaries and is subject to the Council's design guidance. Premises used for residential purposes are ineligible.

Who can apply:  Businesses which are based within one of the following town centres; Aberdare, Ferndale, Llantrisant, Mountain Ash, Pontypridd, Porth, Tonypandy and Treorchy.

What can it fund: Internal and External building works.

How much: Grants are available up to £15,000, based on 50% of eligible project costs.

Local Investment Fund

Aim: The project has been developed with support from the Welsh Government through the European Regional Development Fund, under the Convergence Programme.

LIF provides financial support to help eligible local businesses realise their ambitions to develop and grow by supporting investment in Capital projects.

Who can apply: The LIF fund is specifically designed to support a range of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). The grant is aimed primarily  at the manufacturing sector and associated services. Retail is not eligible, but other  sectors can be considered.

Applicants will need to demonstrate that a significant proportion of their activity is business to business and that they have the ability to 'add value' or offer net benefits to the local economy ( through job creation).

What can it fund: Eligible capital projects could include:

  • Capital Equipment
  • ICT Equipment
  • Development of websites
  • Marketing materials
  • External and internal building works and alterations
