Language and numeracy skills are fundamental to a child's development which is why Language and Play and Number and Play programmes have been funded by Basic Skills Cymru. These sessions aim to share ideas and activities with parents and carers to help them understand how important they are to their child's education.

Language and Play and Number and Play sessions are a great way for mums, dads, carers or guardians to spend quality time with their children, having fun while also learning.

As the campaign continues to ensure each and every young person in Rhondda Cynon Taf  has the skills and confidence they need, Language and Play and Number and Play are a great way to start early, while also enjoying time with your child.

Both Language and Play and Number and Play are six, one and a half hour sessions. The six sessions of Language and Play are:-

Language and Play

• Session One - The Importance of Talk
• Session Two - Talking and Playing in Everyday Routines
• Session Three - Out and About
• Session Four - Books and Stories
• Session Five - Enjoying Stories, Rhymes and Songs
• Session Six - Early Mark Making

Number and Play

• Session One - Numberfun with Songs and Rhymes
• Session Two - Numberfun in Everyday Routines
• Session Three - Numberfun Out and About
• Session Four - Numberfun with Books and Stories
• Session Five - Numberfun Games
• Session Six - Making Playdough

Each session follows the above themes; there is a creative activity, singing and storytelling. Parents and carers each week are encouraged to borrow books, there is time for a snack for the children and tea and coffee for adults.

Parents receive a certificate at the end of the programme and a small gift for the children.
