The annual International Exchange operated by Rhondda Cynon Taf Council's Services for Young People and funded by the British Council is now in its 11th year. For two weeks every summer, young people from France, Poland, Germany and, of course, Wales, get together to visit each others' countries in turn, work on a specific project, and enjoy many intercultural experiences.
This year we hosted the Exchange at Dare Valley Country Park, and worked in partnership with local businesses and organisations on "Creativity & Entrepreneurship", partly funded by the British Council.
A group of 10 young people from across the County Borough joined two Youth Leaders to host their partner organisations from the continent for an experience to remember. They welcomed 30 young people, from France, Germany and Poland, and they worked hard on their Project – where they worked in partnership with Rhondda Golf Club, who gave a huge amount of support and assistance throughout, culminating in a “Dragon’s Den” style scenario, where each of the four culturally mixed teams of enthusiastic young people pitched their business ideas for a Golf Youth Academy.
A highlight of the visit for our European guests was the opportunity to sample plenty of Welsh food, music and traditions, and visits to places of interest such as the Museum of Welsh Life in St Fagans, the Senedd, and Barry Island – along with a host of venues in RCT. They all had some great intercultural experiences, and made new friends.
