There are a number of courses on offer for new and existing carers.

Courses for Foster Carers

Course Title

The following three courses are facilitated by members of the Ymbarel team, and it is preferable if participants attend all three courses

Autism Raising Awareness

  • To have a greater knowledge of autism.
  • To have a better understanding of behaviour, its prevention and analysis.
  • Able to apply your learning to caring for a child on the autistic spectrum.
  • To make life easier and more secure for you foster child
  • To have more confidence in your foster care role.

This is a 3 hour course to be held on: the following dates

11th January 2012 from 9.45am – 1.00pm

Child Protection for Foster Carers

  • Consider how attitudes towards children/childhood have changed over time.
  • To consider how child abuse affects the behaviour of children.
  • What to do if a child discloses abuse.
  • Look at the importance of Safer Caring practice with the children we look after.

A two and a half hour course to be held on the following dates 

18th October 2011

 9.45am – 12.30 pm 

First Aid

First Aid Co-ordinator

  • This course will provide Foster carers with basic Knowledge and Skills to react in the correct manner to an emergency situation requiring basic First Aid
  • By the end of the course you will be able to: -
  • Perform: Basic rescue breathing, Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation and the control of Bleeding and identify common illnesses and injuries

This is a 7 hour course which will be held on the following dates:

7th November 9.30am – 4.30pm 

19th March   9.30am – 4.30pm  

Sleep Difficulties

Children & Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) d

Following the course participants will have a greater awareness of

  • What is sleep and its processes
  • Sleep problems and their management

Routines and Boundary Setting

Age 0 - 5

 

  • Understanding the importance of routines and boundaries for children
  • How to use the tools provided to help set routines and boundaries
  • The opportunity to share experiences of problems when setting boundaries or routines

A three hour course to be held on: 

6th July 2011 

9.45am until 1.00pm

Independent Reviewing Officers Information and Procedures Workshop

Facilitated by Independent Reviewing Officers

These workshops aim to :

To increase awareness and understanding of the review process for Looked After Children.

A half day program of information sharing, discussion and group work .

Discussions and group work tasks will focus on LAC reviews and information sharing from the perspectives of a) the child

b) the child’s parents

A three hour course to be held on

Picky Eaters

Children & Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS)

Following the course participants will have an increased knowledge of:

  • Strategies to manage problematic eating issues in children
  • And know when specialist help should be sought.

A three hour course to be held on: 

8th September 2011

9.45am – 2.30pm

Understanding Equality and Diversity

  • To develop the knowledge, skills and attitude to value and promote diversity
  • To explore how values and beliefs influences practice
  • To examine the use of language and terminology
  • To gain an understanding of how discrimination works
  • To develop skills, and confidence to challenge discriminatory practices
  • To provide a brief overview of EOP legislation

     

A four and a half hour course to be held on:

9th September 2011
from 9.45am – 1.00pm

Attachment Trauma and Child Development

 

  • Develop an understanding of the process of attachment.
  • To consider the impact on children of poor early experiences and the implications for their development and learning.
  • Promoting recovery, adaptation and resilience – helping children to survive and develop.   

A 9 hour course which will take place over two days:

20th September 2011

and 

28th September 2011

Child Development (0 – 5) 

Lynette Evans Specialist Health Visitor Families First

 

 

The course will enable participants:

  • To have an understanding of normal developmental milestones
  • To recognise when development is delayed
  • Share experiences of Developmental problems

 

This is a three hour course which will be held on: 

22nd September 2011

9.45am – 1.00pm

Preparation for Adoption

  • Enable carers to understand the differences between fostering and adoption
  • Enable carers to move children on to adoption in a successful and professional manner
  • Examine the issues around confidentiality
  • Examine contact issues
  • Be able to maintain a professional approach to the task in hand

This is a four and a half hour course which will be held on:

5th October 2011

Communicating and Engaging with Teenagers

Communicating and Engaging with Teenagers -

At the end of the training it is hoped the participants will have an awareness of:

  • an understanding of issues that can lead to teenagers finding it difficult to talk to carers and professionals.
  • communication tools that can be used to aid interaction with young people.
  • the importance of developing good listening skills.
  • how successful communication can lead to positive outcomes for young people. 

A three hour course to be held on:

7th October 2011

9.45am – 1.00pm

Introduction to Safe Moving and Handling of Children for Foster Carers

 

At the end of the course participants will:

  • Know how to handle children safely, in and out of buggies in the playground at bath times etc.
  • And have reduced the risk of muscular skeletal injury to both the children and to themselves

A four and half hour course to be held on:

17th October 2011

from 9.45am – 2.30pm   

Managing Contact for Foster Carers

  • Participants will consider the different 

     options in terms of contact

  • Participants will have the opportunity to

     discuss the losses and benefits for each

     party involved in contact

  • Participants will consider some of the

     research focused on contact

A four and a half hour course to be held on:

19th October 2011

from 9.45am – 2.30pm

Caring for Babies with foetal alcohol syndrome

 

  • To have an understanding of the affects that drugs and alcohol have on the foetus and newborn baby.
  • To have an understanding of the long term effects of foetal alcohol syndrome and foetal alcohol spectrum disorder.
  • To have an opportunity to explore some of the specific needs of children affected by parental substance misuse and share experiences of caring for those children.

 

This is a 3 hour course:

2nd November 2011

9.45am – 1.00pm

Substance Misuse

 TEDS

  • To introduce participants to the substances potentially used by young people
  • Identify substances in relation to appearance.
  • Discuss the methods of use of a variety of substances
  • Classify substances according to their effects.
  • Describe the risks associated with the substances used by young people.
  • Discuss ways of responding to incidents of substance misuse

This is a three hour course to be held on:

Sexual Exploitation Risk Assessment Framework Level 1

Foster Carers

Barnardos

  • Describe and explain the process of child sexual exploitation
  • Be able to identify children/young people at risk of 'CSE' using vulnerabilities identified through best practice and research
  • Assess children/young people at risk using the SERAF Risk Assessment tool and apply a category of risk to each child
  • State what intervention should accompany each category of risk
  • Identify the children who are most at risk and utilise the local protocol to inform future actions
  • Use government guidance and legislation relevant to CSE to inform future work with young people

Number and Play for Pre-School Children

 

Number and Play is a follow on from Language and Play and provides parents and carers with ideas and suggestions for having fun with numbers.

This is a seven and a half hour course taking place over the following dates: 

2nd 9th 16th February and 1st and 8th March 2012

from 9.45am until 11.30pm
