Parental-support“Being a parent will probably be the most rewarding job you’ll ever do - and the greatest challenge” There's no one right way to parent and no super-parent out there with all the answers.

Always look for your child's good behaviour and praise it.

Our Bringing Up Children groups are free and informal group sessions designed to promote your child’s development, promote good communication and strengthen parenting skills as well as giving you the chance to meet other parents and to make new friends. Below you will find details on the different groups available from the Flying Start Parenting Team.

Our team aims to provide you with a local service that you could find useful in your role as a parent.

You will need to live in a Flying Start area, have a Flying Start Health Visitor and be pregnant or have a child under 4 years or age.

1. Workshops

For all Parents
Our workshops offer a range of taster sessions that not only give parents an opportunity to develop new skills, but also to meet and get to know other parents in a comfortable and informal environment.  Your Flying Start Parenting wWorker will aslo be on hand to answer any questions you may have about our service.  Contact the Parenting Team for a timetable of upcoming workshops in your area.

2. Welcome to the World
For expectant parents
Welcome to the World, is eight informal sessions giving the opportunity for parents to think about their future as parents, as a couple and a family.  The seesions include looking at your baby's development before and after birth, communication between parents by sharing experiences, the importance of nurturing yourself and to understand the practical tasks of caring for a new baby.  The sessions will also include parents creating a memory book for their babies.

3. Incredible Baby - Baby Club
For parents / carers with babies up to 6 months of age
Following on from Welcome to the World, the Baby Club covers aspects of your baby's development and progress.  We meet for 2 hours a week for 10 weeks.
Each week has a different topic; exploring babies ages, milestons and routines.  Discovering how your baby likes to play, the differen ways your baby communicates; dealing with crying and fussy periods, and how to introduce solid foods and much more.

4. Incredible Toddler
For parents / carers with toddlers and children between 12 months and under 4 years old.
Following on from the Incredible Baby Club is the Incredible Toddler.  These sessions cover aspects of a toddler's development, and the challenges for parents.  Topics include; understanding toddlers' development and pre-school; increasing positive behaviour, how to handle hitting and biting; plus lots more.

5. The Parenting Puzzle
For parents / carers with children under 4 years old.
The Parenting Puzzle helps parents be more positive and nurturing with their children and each other.  Understanding and managing our own feelings.  The sessions covered are; praise, family rules and discipline, alongside confidence, self esteem and self awareness.

6. Coping with Young Children and 1 to 1 Support
For parents / carers with children under 4 years old.
Coping with young children provides one to one and / or group support to help parents / carers understand and manage difficult behaviour

7. Dad Matters
For fathers wih children under 4 years old.
Fathers are so important to their families.  Evidence shows that children who have strong relationships with their Dad, achieve greater academic, emotional and social stability later in life.  This service is for fathers who may want to share their concerns, experiences and skills through one to one activities, enriching their expereiences of family life.

8. The Family Life Project
For parents / carers with children under 4 years old.
The Family Life Project is available to couples who are concerned about their relationship and its impact on their child.  We offer up to 10 sessions in your home.
