What information do I need to give you before you can tell me whether the Council owns a particular property or area of land?

We need to know the boundaries of the land in question and if possible the full postal address. The boundaries are often difficult to describe precisely over the telephone without looking together at a detailed map (which can be arranged for personal visitors). We should be able to tell from a telephone enquiry whether the Council owns land nearby, but for a more precise answer, a plan showing the exact boundaries of the land can be submitted by fax or post.

What if I want to know who owns private property?

Please contact the Land Registry to obtain the relevant enquiry form. NB the Land Registry will be unable to assist you if it turns out that the land concerned is unregistered, in which case you may wish to make enquiries locally with neighbours.

How do I purchase, lease or rent a property or piece of land that I am interested in?

Write or email Corporate Estates at the address below giving a brief reason as to why you are interested in purchasing the property or piece of land and enclose a sketch identifying the property or land.

When we receive your letter we will make enquiries with other Council Divisions to establish whether the property or land is still needed by the Council, or whether it is surplus to requirements and can be disposed of, leased or rented.

This can be a lengthy process but each stage of the process is monitored to ensure that we are able to get back to you as soon as we can.

Please note that if a property or piece of land is disposed of, leased or rented by the Council, it will normally have to be advertised on the open market. You will be informed if this is the case.
