Pontypridd Roll of Honour Memorial

The Pontypridd Roll of Honour Memorial in Ynysangharad Park consists of two walls listing the names of people from Pontypridd who lost their lives serving for their country and the freedom of others.

One wall displays the names of those who died in the First World War whilst the other lists the casualties from the Second World War and subsequent conflicts.

They are located alongside the long standing memorials which have been in place for many years and were designed to complement these.

The Roll of Honour Memorial walls were unveiled and dedicated by The Lord Lieutenant for Mid Glamorgan in a public service on Friday 4 November 2011.

They were partly funded by public donations and members of the public themselves played an important role in the compilation of the Roll of Honour, for which the definition of Pontypridd used was the former Urban District and current Town Council boundaries.

Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council led the work on the project due to its role as Trustees of Ynysangharad War Memorial Park and worked closely with Pontypridd Town Council and the Royal British Legion to establish the Pontypridd Roll of Honour Memorial.

It did so in recognition that this strengthens the Park's role as a memorial to the sacrifice and contribution made by Pontypridd to the World War conflicts.

It consists of the names of those from within the former Pontypridd Urban District and current Town Council boundaries who died serving in the World Wars and subsequent conflicts.

While the memorial walls in Ynysangharad War Memorial Park list the names of the fallen, the Pontypridd Roll of Honour, complete with service details where these are known, can also be viewed in two specially produced books held in Pontypridd Library and Pontypridd Historical Centre.

Due to a Roll of Honour for Pontypridd not already being available and the advice of the Ministry of Defence that it was not available in an 'identifiable format', it was compiled based on existing records and local knowledge as well as the assistance of the public.

The Roll of Honour was subject to two phases of public consultation between March and July 2011 with people encouraged to provide information that may give rise to necessary additions and amendments.

Whilst all efforts were made to ensure it is as complete and accurate as possible, the list of names may potentially contain some errors and omissions, a risk that has had to be tolerated for the project to be achievable. You can view further information on the methodology and criteria used for the Roll of Honour online|.

We are extremely grateful for the help we have received from members of the public in compiling the Roll of Honour.

In particular, a special mention needs to be made to the late Ray Baldwin, a former Pontypridd Town Councillor, whose time consuming original research provided an initial list of names to work from.
