Exploring the Pilgrims Trail from Pontypridd to Penrhys is set to be one of the highlights of an exciting new heritage project in Rhondda Cynon Taf.
You can following the footsteps of the ancient route the pilgrims travelled to St Mary’s Well and the shrine of Our Lady of Penrhys, one of the holiest sites in Wales, and visit the remote hilltop church of Llanwynno and St Gwynno’s Well.
The Pilgrim’s Trail is part of the “Open Doors” initiative that celebrates the country’s fantastic architecture and culture by offering free access to properties that are usually closed to the public or normally charge for admission.
Rhondda Cynon Taf Council, working in partnership with various organizations and individuals, are making this year’s Open Doors event the best yet – with more than 80 activities to inspire and educate.
During the month local residents and visitors to the area will be able to view the interior of a whole host of fascinating buildings which played important roles in the development of the entire County Borough.
The Pilgrim’s Trail is a full-day for those wishing to walk the entire route which involve a number of steep ascents and descents. A good level of fitness is required and walking boots and waterproof and windproof clothing is required.
The University of Wales, Newport is proving a minibus which can take drivers back to the start of the trail.
Cabinet Member for Culture, Recreation and Tourism, Cllr. Robert Bevan explained, ‘We have been working closely with community partners and Civic Trust Wales to co-ordinate and promote this programme locally which is part of the European Heritage Days initiative.
“The events will include a number of churches and chapels being open, historical talks and tours and some rare opportunities to see inside and gain an insight into buildings that are not normally open to the public.”
Pilgrim’s Trail takes place on Monday September 5th. The group will meet at White Bridge on the Ynysybwl Road out of Pontypridd at 10am, the Brynffynon Hotel in Llanwynno at 12.30pm and Penrhys at 4pm.
