With Her Majesty The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee fast approaching in less than 16 weeks (Friday 1st June), it’s time to start thinking about how you will celebrate this special occasion. The celebrations will span the entire weekend and the two day bank holiday.
Many residents may consider holding their own Street Parties and Rhondda Cynon Taf Council are keen to help residents do this in the safest way possible. The Council has produced guidance and an application pack for people interested in holding a party, and there are various things to consider if you choose this option, including securing a road closure for your street.
There is usually a charge made to administer road closures, but in the spirit of the celebrations, the Council will waive the costs. However, residents should be aware that road closures can take a few weeks to secure and are not always possible in all locations for safety and traffic management reasons.
To avoid disappointment the Council’s Traffic Management section are asking residents to think about hosting their parties in local venues, such as, community centres, schools or local parks to ensure that their parties are safely organised and are not affected by the British weather and summer showers.
If you still feel that a Street Party is the best way for you to celebrate The Queen’s special day then you need to contact the Council’s Traffic Management section as soon as possible to ensure you secure the necessary permissions. There are a range of criteria that each application will need to meet and it is anticipated that there may be a high demand. The deadline for applications is 1st May 2012 and unfortunately, it may not be possible to accept late applications.
Councillor Andrew Morgan, Cabinet Member for Transport, Customer Care and Emergency Planning, said: “The Council is keen to ensure that residents celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in the safest way possible. If residents chose to hold a street party they need to seek the necessary permissions or they could face having their party plans disrupted. We obviously want to avoid this and help people enjoy the occasion.”
