Pontypridd Library will host a drop-in session
People whose lives are affected by cancer can discuss their concerns and seek information at special drop-in sessions at Rhondda Cynon Taf libraries during Macmillan’s Cancer Talk Week (January 23-29, 2012).
Four drop-in sessions will be held throughout the week, through the Macmillan RCT Libraries Cancer Information Service. Project co-ordinator Karen Langworthy will offer free confidential one-to-one support and ensure people have access to up-to-date cancer information at sessions at:
Pontypridd Library - Monday, January 23 from 1-3pm
Treorchy Library - Tuesday, January 24 from 1-3pm
Aberdare Library - Wednesday, January 25, 1-3pm
Pontyclun Library - Thursday, January 26, 10am-12pm
The partnership between Macmillan Cancer Support and Rhondda Cynon Taf Library Service is the first of its kind in Wales, providing cancer information points in all 28 libraries and four mobile libraries.
Project co-ordinator Karen Langworthy has been in post since April 2011 and since then has given one-to-one and telephone information and support to more than 200 people. Additionally, more than 3,000 health information leaflets have been distributed by the service through libraries and at various outreach and community events.
As well as providing information, the project puts people affected by cancer in touch with other services and organisations who can help them, for example with benefit advice or counselling services.
Cllr Robert Bevan, Rhondda Cynon Taf Cabinet Member for Leisure, Culture and Tourism, said: "We are proud to be the first local authority in Wales to be offering this important service for those affected by cancer. I hope that those people whose lives are affected by cancer will benefit from the drop-in sessions."
