Splash and Dash

Budding tri-athletes splashed and dashed their way to glory during a first-of-its-kind sporting event hosted by Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Leisure Services.

As the countdown to the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Games continues, young people from across the county borough showed the world’s sporting stars how they do it at Splash and Dash.

Hosted at Bronwydd Pool and the surrounding Bronwydd Park, the event saw nearly 40 young athlete swim lengths of the pool and run laps of the park to give them a taste of a tri-athlon.

The day was such a success, it is set to become a regular event and it is hoped more people will get inspired and get involved – either at Splash and Dash next year or at their local leisure centre now.

At the end of the day, there was a very special treat when Olympic Torchbearer Jeff Cowland, who works for Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Children and Community Services directorate, visited the venue with his iconic Olympic Torch.

Cllr Robert Bevan, Cabinet Member for Sustainable Development, Leisure and Tourism at Rhondda Cynon Taf Council attended the event and started off proceedings, as well as congratulating young participants.

He said: “Congratulations to all the talented young sports people from across the county borough who made Splash and Dash such a successful day.

“Of course, the tri-athlon taster and the plans to extend and improve it in future years are just one of the ways in which you can enjoy Olympic Fever in Rhondda Cynon Taf, thanks to the Council’s innovative, varied Leisure Services provision.

“There is running, Zumba, aerobics, aqua aerobics, gyms, water gyms, swimming for older residents, swimming for newborns, trixter bikes, hula hoops, pilates, yoga  and much much more."
