Jenny Celebrates A Centenary With Her Family
There was a big birthday to celebrate recently at Pontypridd Nursing Home as one of its residents turned 100.
Sarah Coates, better known to friends and family as ‘Jenny’, was born in Porth in 1912. One of nine children, she had six brothers and two sisters, living with her family in Jenkins Street, Porth until she married.
In 1934 Jenny and her husband moved to Broadway, Pontypridd where they celebrated the arrival of their son, Ritchie.
Active in the war, she worked at a nearby factory, producing spark plugs before devoting the rest of her life to caring for her family.
After her husband passed away in 1998, Jenny moved from Broadway into flats and later to Pontypridd Nursing Home.
Of all her hobbies throughout the decades, knitting was a particular favourite, and a skill she practiced for many years. Later in life she also developed a fondness for Bingo, often going down to her local hall to play a game and socialise with friends.
As she begins her 100th year, Jenny is lucky enough to be surrounded by family; her son, three grandsons, four great-grandchildren and even two great-great-granddaughters as well as her youngest sister, now living Coventry.
