It secures the place of Pontypridd, and indeed the whole of Rhondda Cynon Taf, as a magnificent venue for a summer music festival for fans of all ages, and the envy of all music promoters.
Now in its sixth consecutive year, Ponty’s Big Weekend is once again fast securing Pontypridd and the County Borough a prominent place on the national summer music festival scene.
Boy band JLS was the headline act at Ponty’s Big Weekend in 2010, performing in front of 7,000 fans after tickets sold out within minutes of going on sale to the public.
Back again in 2013, this time they are set to play in front of tens of thousands fans at Ynysangharad War Memorial Park.
JLS - made up of Aston Merrygold, Marvin Humes, Oritsé Williams and JB Gill - first rose to fame as the runners-up in the fifth series of ITV’s The X Factor in 2008, coming second to Alexandra Burke.
Their first two singles Beat Again and Everybody In Love, both went straight to No1 in the UK singles chart. Their self-titled debut album, released in 2009, also became a million-seller in the UK, with the band winning both the Best British Single (Beat Again) and British Breakthrough Act categories at the 2010 Brit Awards.
They have also won a string of MOBO Awards since 2009 - including Best Song (Beat Again), Best Newcomer, Best UK Act, Best Album and Best Video (Do You Feel What I Feel).
In 2010, JLS signed an American record deal with Jive Records, making the US chart debut with Everybody In Love.
The Club Is Alive, taken from their second studio album released in 2010, earned the band their third No1 in the UK Singles Chart. This was followed by Love You More, the official 2010 Children In Need song, which topped the charts.
Their next single She Makes Me Wanna, gave JLS their fifth UK No1, making them one of Britain’s most successful boy bands of the 21st Century, selling more than 10 million records worldwide.
LITTLE MIX made history by becoming the first group ever to win The X Factor. Their Winner’s Single, a cover of the Damien Rice hit Cannonball, shot straight to No1 in 2011.
Their follow-up single Wings also reached No1, followed by DNA charting at No 3. Their debut album, also called DNA, reached No3 in the UK Album Chart.
The all-girl group, consisting of Perrie Edwards, Jesy Nelson, Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Jade Thirlwall, are delighted to be a part of the 2013 Ponty’s Big Weekend line-up.
UNION J, also contestants on the ninth TV series of The X Factor in 2012, made it through to the semi-final stages. Mentored by Louis Walsh, the four-piece boy band became an instant hit, appearing on the recent The X Factor UK Tour alongside all other 12 series finalists. They will be releasing their debut single in June 2013.
