The Role of a School Crossing Patrol
The role of a school crossing patrol is to help young children cross safely across the busier roads in our county on their way to and from school each day. The school crossing patrol service is provided by the Rhondda Cynon Taf Road Safety Unit as part of its efforts to improve road safety.
In 2000 the law changed, allowing crossing patrols to stop traffic so that they can help anyone cross the road, not just children. Patrols are usually on duty twice each day - in the morning and afternoon.Crossing patrols will usually be on duty 30 minutes before and after the start and finish of the school day.
Patrols are trained to a high standard, and receive regular visits from their supervisors to ensure safety standards are being maintained. Because of this, crossing patrols have become trusted and valued members of local communities throughout Rhondda Cynon Taf.
Is it mandatory to stop for a School Crossing Patrol?
Under UK law it is an offence for a motorist not to stop if signalled to do so by a patroller. In the past patrollers only had the authority to stop the traffic for children. However, the Transport Act 2000 changed the law was so that a patroller had the authority to stop the traffic for any pedestrian

School Crossing Patrols are provided where children are in danger from road traffic when walking to and from school. This is not necessarily directly outside a school but could be anywhere on a direct route.
