Church Village Bypass will shortly be open to walkers for the one and only time.
A celebratory day is being organised by Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and its contractors for the £90m project, Costain. For the first and only time, residents and visitors to the county borough will be able to become a part of modern history when they walk the highway.
The “888” walk – which stands for an 8km walk on August 8th – is expected to attracts thousands of visitors to the area as they take advantage of the special opportunity to stroll the highway between Cross Inn and Tonteg.
Starting at the new roundabout at Gwaun Meisgyn, the walk will lead all the way along the Bypass to Tonteg and return to the same spot – making a total of 8km.
Fundraisers for the Rhondda Cynon Taf Mayor’s Charities and GTFM Radio will also be taking part in an effort to collect donations for their various worthwhile causes.
The 888 Walk of the Church Village Bypass starts at 11am and will end at 3pm. Limited parking facilities will also be available for motorists near the location of the start of the walk, but local people are asked to walk to the starting point whenever possible.
The important day will also mark the opening of the Community Route by Assembly Member Jane Davidson, Pontypridd MP Owen Smith, Leader of the Council Cllr Russell Roberts and the Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport, Customer Care and Emergency Planning, Cllr Andrew Morgan.
The Community Route stretches the entire length of the Bypass and has been developed through close liaison with the sustainable transport charity Sustrans and provides a safe, high quality route for both walkers and cyclists to use.
At 10am on August 8th the completed Community Route – which also includes sections of art work inspired by local schoolchildren and voluntary organisations – will be officially opened to the general public.
The Community Route is also one of the new routes being developed as part of the Valleys Cycle Network which will receive funding from the Convergence European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Assembly Government.
Cllr Morgan said: “We are expecting a huge crowd of people to attend these major events as they take advantage of walking the Church Village Bypass for the one and only time. Coupled with this will be the opportunity to witness the official opening of the new Community Route, which undoubtedly will be welcomed asset to future generations.”
