The inaugural Bernard Baldwin Memorial Cup is to be presented at the 2017 Nos Galan Road Races in Mountain Ash on New Year’s Eve.
Bernard Baldwin MBE, the founder and patron of the world-famous event, passed away peacefully on January 3 this year, at Ysbyty Cwm Cynon, aged 91.
Race organisers Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and the Nos Galan Committee wanted Bernard Baldwin to forever be remembered and associated with the Nos Galan Road Races and have therefore decided to present the Bernard Baldwin Memorial Cup to the fastest County Borough male athlete in the Elite Race.
Bernard, who received his MBE from The Queen at Buckingham Palace in 1971, for his services to British athletics, was also granted the Freedom of the County Borough of Rhondda Cynon Taf in 2014.
Alison Leighton-Williams, of Caegarw, Mountain Ash, was announced as the new Patron of the Nos Galan Road Races earlier this year, following the death of her father.
It is hoped that she will present the inaugural Bernard Baldwin Memorial Cup on Sunday, December 31.
Cllr Ann Crimmings, Chair of the Nos Galan Committee and Council Cabinet Member for Environment and Leisure, said: “Without Bernard Baldwin we would never have had the Nos Galan Road Races in the first place. It is therefore fitting that he will forever be a part of our event.
“Just like the Lilian Board Memorial Cup, the Bernard Baldwin Memorial Cup will be presented every New Year’s Eve, and an invite has been extended to Bernard’s daughter Alison to present the Cup for the first time this year.”
There will be increased security measures in place for this year’s Nos Galan Road Races in Mountain Ash on New Year’s Eve, and as a result, extended temporary road closures will be in place.
