Hundreds of swimmers of all ages and abilities once again headed to the National Lido of Wales, Lido Ponty, for the annual Boxing Day Swim.
A total of 700 swimmers had booked onto the five, one-hour sessions in advance at the Council’s open-air family tourist attraction.
Among them were Elizabeth Park and her family, from Leeds - more than 200 miles from the National Lido of Wales!
Elizabeth, 32, originally from Blackwood, said: “My husband and two daughters came down to Wales with me, but I left them in the capable hands of my mother while my father John and I came along for the Boxing Day Swim – it was amazing.
“We were so determined to come along this year as we tried to book a session last Boxing Day but failed as demand for places was huge. It was the same this year, but we were lucky enough to secure a place this time around.
“This was our second Boxing Day Swim as we also managed to come along during the first season in 2015.
“Having grown up in Wales and lived in Yorkshire for almost nine years, it is always special to come back home, especially over the festive season.
“I am a bit too young to remember the original Lido in Pontypridd but I absolutely love everything about the place as it is today. I would love to come back again – maybe on one of our trips back to Wales next summer – and Boxing Day 2018 of course!”
Heated to 29 Degrees, the swimming pools were packed for the five Boxing Day sessions, from 8.30am onwards.
This year’s Boxing Day Swim at the National Lido of Wales, Lido Ponty, saw 200 more swimmers attending than in 2016, ending yet another record-breaking year.
Cllr Ann Crimmings, Cabinet Member for Environment and Leisure, said: “All of our Boxing Day swimmers had a great time with us once again this year, helping to create a truly wonderful festive atmosphere at the National Lido of Wales, Lido Ponty.
“We have had yet another remarkable season, welcoming over 72,000 visitors in 2017. We look forward to seeing all our regulars, as well as new faces, join us for our 2018 season.”
