After enjoying the excellent facilities and fun fitness classes as a pay-as-you-go customer for more than 30 years, Rhydyfelin's Cheryl Thomas has taken the plunge and has become the 10,000th Leisure for Life customer!
People have been joining Rhondda Cynon Taf Council's easy, affordable and all-inclusive Leisure Membership scheme at the average rate of five people PER DAY in the last year following a £1.7m investment in leisure centres through RCTinvest.
The ongoing investment programme actually began at Hawthorn, which benefitted from a new gym with the latest equipment, as well as refurbished fitness studios to complement the excellent range of fitness classes customers like Cheryl enjoy.
Since then, new gyms have been installed at Bronwydd Pool, Rhondda Sports Centre, Abercynon Sports Centre and Sobell Leisure Centre. The gym at Llantwit Fardre Sports Centre has also been modernised and further investment is planned.
Cheryl, 62 was officially the 10,000 member and the leisure achievement was celebrated in style at a fitball class last week - just one of the many fitness classes Cheryl enjoys for less than £5 a week, thanks to her membership.
She said: "I have always been a Hawthorn customer and think that the staff and the instructors are exceptional, they are so helpful and friendly and it makes it a pleasure to attend the centre.
"I attend Fitball, Urban Rebounding, Bodymax, Zumba, Zumba Strong, Pilates and Functional Fitness at the centre every week. As a pay as you go customer, this was costing me over £23 a week.
"Now, thanks to my Leisure for Life Membership, which I enjoy at the concessionary rate of £21 a month, all of these classes cost me less than £5 a week and I can attend more, swim when I like and go to the gym when I like if I wanted to at no extra cost.
"I feel so much better going to the leisure centre as often as I can. I walk down in the morning asking myself if I really feel like it but, by the end of the class, I feel so much better, it sets me up for the day and just makes me feel so much more energetic."
Cheryl and her husband Brian run Duffy's, the Ex Servicemens' Club in Maesycoed and have done so for the last nine years. Prior to that, they ran Rhydyfelin Labour Club for 19 years.
The mother of two and grandmother of three has always been involved in fitness and, as well as regularly attending Hawthorn Leisure Centre since it opened, she was also a member of the Popmobility squad, which used to perform at events and in public spaces across the county borough.
Cllr Ann Crimmings, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council's Cabinet Member for Environment and Leisure, said: "Congratulations to Cheryl for becoming the 10,000th Leisure for Life member.
"As someone who enjoys attending a variety of classes every week, she really is getting value for money with her membership.
"Investing in improving our leisure facilities has been a priority over the last eighteen months and it is pleasing to see that one of the outcomes has been a significant increase in members.
“The Leisure for Life membership was designed to ensure it was easy to join, affordable and offered access to gym, swim, fitness classes and indoor sports at all of our leisure centres.
"This means a standard member, paying by direct debit, can go to the gym as often as they like, swim as often as they like and attend as many fitness classes as they want for around £1 a day."
