Abercynon’s new all-weather 3G sports pitch will soon open to the community following the Council’s latest investment in outdoor leisure facilities.
The new sports pitch, located at Abercynon Sports Centre having replaced one of the existing grass football pitches, has now passed a safety inspection and will be open from Friday, February 16. The Council is now accepting bookings from local sports clubs and the wider community.
The new facility for Abercynon, funded through #RCTinvest, was announced in March 2017.
The Council has already delivered new 3G pitches in Mountain Ash, Pentre and Graig through #RCTinvest, and at Y Pant, Tonyrefail, Aberdare and Tonypandy schools as part as 21st Century Schools investments supported by the Welsh Government. Meanwhile, in October 2017, Cabinet announced a further investment would be made for new all-weather facilities at Ysgol Gyfun Rhydywaun in Penywaun and Bryncelynnog Comprehensive School in Beddau.
Councillor Ann Crimmings, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Leisure, recently visited the new facility in Abercynon. She said: “It is fantastic news that the Council’s latest investment in outdoor, all-weather leisure facilities, is about to be delivered with the new 3G sports pitch at Abercynon Sports Centre.
“The Council has previously announced its ambition to provide residents with a 3G sports pitch within three miles – no matter where they live in the County Borough. Alongside Abercynon, the new all-weather facility in Church Village has been built, with further projects in Ferndale, Beddau and Penywaun also planned – as the Council continues to invest in Leisure as a key priority in the ongoing £200m #RCTinvest programme.
“These all-weather pitches have many advantages over grass surfaces. They do not deteriorate during periods of bad weather, enabling clubs to continue training when, in the past, they couldn’t. The 3G surface also helps ease problems with fixture schedules by reducing the number of matches being called off. As each new 3G pitch is completed, the Council continues to deliver upon its commitment to local sports clubs to improve local facilities.”
Public bookings are now being accepted via phone only, on 01443 562202. However, out of hours bookings for a time slot on the same day can be made at Abercynon Sports Centre’s reception.
