The Council has issued a progress report for the refurbishment works at Cymmer Primary School as part of its 21st Century Schools investment – and the project will now be completed in November 2018.
The £1.9m project, funded through #RCTinvest and the Welsh Government’s 21st Century Schools and Education Programme, is part of a wider £85m investment to transform education facilities in Rhondda and Tonyrefail.
The Cymmer Primary School improvements include extensive remodelling and refurbishment of the junior block. External works include new roof coverings, repairs, a new school entrance and access, and an upgrade to the Multi Use Games Area. Internal works include layout changes to provide first-class teaching areas with the latest ICT equipment – while the project will also provide a multi-purpose hall, commercial kitchen and community room.
To date, new roof coverings and stone repairs have been completed – which is a significant part of the overall project – along with internal structural alterations which are nearly complete.
However, the works will now be completed by the end of November 2018, due largely to unforeseen issues which have arisen in the refurbishment of the older Victorian building. This has resulted in the requirement to undertake additional works to classrooms – which have taken longer than anticipated, but have further enhanced the improvements to the school.
The Council has informed the Headteacher and Governing Bodies of Cymmer Primary School and Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhondda – while parents and pupils have been issued with a newsletter about the arrangements. Junior pupils will remain in refurbished accommodation at Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhondda until the end of November 2018, which they have settled into and are using well.
Councillor Joy Rosser, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Education and Lifelong Learning, said: “The improvements being delivered at Cymmer Primary School are future-proofing the building for the benefit of generations of learners – thanks to a £1.9m investment through #RCTinvest and Welsh Government’s 21st Century School initiative. In total, £85m is being invested in schools throughout Rhondda and Tonyrefail.
“A large part of the project has been completed – including new roof coverings and structural alterations inside the building. However, while significant progress has been made, the project is now extended to the end of November 2018, and the Council has informed the school, governors, parents and pupils.
“Staff and pupils will be able to enjoy their fantastic new facilities and host Christmas celebrations in their newly-refurbished school.”
The relocation of pupils and staff to the junior block will take place towards the end of November. The Council will communicate details of this in due course.
