The Council has completed £100,000 works to widen the carriageway at Club Street in Aberaman, to accommodate the Extra Care scheme being delivered at the former Maesffynnon Residential Care Home site.
The project, which has been ongoing over the summer after work started from July 23, has created a 5.5-metre wide carriageway with 2-metre ‘on road’ parking bay, as well as a new footway. These works followed BT cable diversions during mid-July, which were completed ahead of the scheme.
The final surfacing of the road and footway was completed during August, and road markings were recently added.
The project was necessary to complement the Council and Linc Cymru’s Extra Care development off Club Street, which includes the construction of 40 new apartments, enabling older people to live as active and independent lives as possible. A ‘ground breaking’ event was held in June 2018 to mark the start of the development, and works have since begun on site.
Councillor Andrew Morgan, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and Cabinet Member with responsibility for Highways, said: “Good progress has been made throughout the summer to widen the carriageway at Club Street, and the project also included footway improvements next to the Extra Care site.
“The works have delivered these improvements to ensure the road is suitable in consideration of the Extra Care development which, once completed, will transform the old care home site and put more demand on Club Street.
“The scheme was included in the £23.6m Highways Capital Programme for 2018/19, which has followed an investment of more than £20m for Highways and Transportation schemes in 2017/18, and £91m over the last seven years.
“The main works at Club Street, Aberaman, were completed on schedule in August, having been scheduled during the school summer holiday to minimise disruption as much as possible. The white lines have recently been added, outside of peak hours. I’d like to thank local residents for their cooperation while this scheme was carried out.”
