The Council has completed a Welsh Government-funded scheme to replace a grass verge with a new footway near Nantgarw Business Park.

The £40,000 project, located at the northern end of A4054 Cardiff Road and to the south of the business park, has extended the existing footway along the busy road. The new two-metre wide footway now runs opposite the bus stop serving the southbound lane, and adjacent to the northbound bus stop.

The work, carried out in support of the Active Travel (Wales) Act 2013, has linked the existing footways to either site of the section of grass verge. It has ensured there is a walking route for pedestrians on each side of the road.

Councillor Andrew Morgan, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and Cabinet Member with responsibility for Highways, said: “This local scheme in Nantgarw started on January 14, and has now been completed ahead of schedule. The Council secured full Welsh Government funding for the scheme, as we continue to pursue important external investment to complement our own #RCTinvest funding for local highways schemes.

“Our Highways Capital Programme for 2018/19 is £23.6m, which brings our total investment for the service to £91m over the past seven years. The Council has also agreed £23.5m funding over the next three years, to repair and maintain footways and carriageways – as we continue to go above and beyond our statutory duty in this area with an ‘accelerated funding’ approach.

“The footway scheme in Nantgarw was the latest to improve and support the Active Travel provision within our communities. The Council submitted an Integrated Network Map to Welsh Government in February 2018, outlining the cycling and walking routes to be delivered over the next 15 years.

“The work at Cardiff Road required some traffic management, and I’d like to thank local residents and commuters for their cooperation throughout the scheme – which has now improved access for pedestrians in this area.”
