Hundreds Enjoyed Boxing Day Swim

A record 700 swimmers took to the water at the National Lido of Wales, Lido Ponty, to take part in the annual Boxing Day Swim.

With its heated pool, people flocked to the Council’s popular outdoor family water attraction on December 26 to make the most of the festive season.

The 2018 Boxing Day Swim was fully booked weeks in advance, making it the most successful season ever at the National Lido of Wales in Pontypridd.

The first swim session of the day got underway at 8:30am, with sessions throughout the day. Last year’s event attracted more than 500 swimmers.

This was the final opportunity of the year to swim at the National Lido of Wales, Lido Ponty, until the new season is launched next year.

The National Lido of Wales, Lido Ponty, has welcomed more than 266,000 visitors since opening in 2015 and has now ended the record-breaking season in style.

The wonderful summer weather attracted over 91,000 visitors since the 2018 season started in March – an increase of over 16,000 visitors on the previous season.

Cllr Ann Crimmings, Cabinet Member for Environment, Leisure and Heritage Services, said: “Our Boxing Day Swim was once again a massive success, with hundreds of people enjoying a swim in the great outdoors in December.

“This has been our busiest season ever at the National Lido of Wales, Lido Ponty, and what an amazing way to end it.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank our staff and all of our Lido visitors who make the place such a unique place to come along and remember our historic past while at the same time making new memories.

“We look forward to welcoming you all again in 2019.”

The National Lido of Wales, Lido Ponty, has recently been crowned Best Cultural Heritage Project in Wales at the 2018 EU Funds Awards held in Cardiff.

Originally opened in 1927, Lido Ponty has undergone a major redevelopment in recent years, attracting visitors from all over the country and overseas.

The £6.3m regeneration of the Grade II listed outdoor family water attraction was officially re-opened on July 6, 2016, by His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales and Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cornwall.

The Waterside Café and Lido Play, the childrens’ adventure park at Ynysangharad War Memorial Park, are open all year around.
