Commenting on reports in respect of the future of the Ford engine plant in Bridgend, County Borough Councillor Andrew Morgan, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council said:

“If indications are correct about the potential decision in respect of the Ford engine plant in Bridgend later today, this will be a devastating blow to the local economy of South Wales.

The livelihoods of hundreds people in Rhondda Cynon Taf reply upon the well-paid and skilled employment provided by Ford in Bridgend.

The significance of the Ford engine plant in the local economy over many decades, has developed and supported a huge supply chain, with many of those competent manufacturers being based in Rhondda Cynon Taf.

As a result, today’s announcement will impact not just upon the 1,700 individuals employed at Ford Bridgend, but inevitably upon the workforces employed in the huge supply chain network and the motor manufacturing base which exists in South Wales and this County.

Once the detail of today’s announcement is known, there will be a need for all local authorities in South Wales to engage with Welsh Government to support the wider motor manufacturing economy across the region and those individuals personally impacted by this decision.

My office will be speaking with the Trade Unions who represent Ford employees and the wider sector this morning to led our support.”
