The Council has organised temporary bus arrangements this weekend due to Welsh Water work in Aberdare, which requires a road closure at Monk Street.
Welsh Water will close a section of Monk Street, between its junctions with Jenkin Street and Griffiths Street, in order to undertake essential repairs to a water main. The road closure will be in effect from 10.30pm on Saturday, November 16, to 6pm on Sunday, November 17 – or until work is complete.
An alternative route for motorists (from north of the closure) is via Wind St, Ynyslwyd St and Jenkin St. From the southern side of the closure, they should proceed via Catherine St, Elizabeth St, Cross St, Cardiff St and Victoria Square. Access will be maintained for pedestrians and emergency services.
The alternative route for large vehicles is via the A4233, A4058 to Pontypridd, A470 and A4059 to Aberdare – or this route in reverse order.
Temporary Bus Arrangements
Due to Welsh Water’s works, the Council has organised temporary bus arrangements for Sunday – when Monk Street will be closed to bus services.
The 172 Aberdare to Bridgend service will operate via Pontypridd and Tonypandy – and not via Maerdy Mountain Road. Departures from Aberdare, Bridgend, Porthcawl, Tonypandy and Tonyrefail will remain unchanged.
A Stagecoach shuttle bus service will operate between Maerdy, Ferndale, Tylorstown, Penrhys Roundabout, Ystrad, Llwynypia and Tonypandy Bus Station. It will connect with the 172 Service at Tonypandy for onward travel, with the 172 and the shuttle services ensuring they connect with each other at Tonypandy. The shuttle service will operate as follows:
- Departing Maerdy Court at 9.28am, 11.28am, 2.28pm, 4.28pm and 6.28pm to Tonypandy Bus Station.
- Departing Tonypandy Bus Station at 12.42pm, 2.54pm, 5.42pm, 7.42pm and 9.34pm to Maerdy Court.
The Council would like to thank residents and commuters in advance for their cooperation, as Welsh Water carries out its important repair scheme.
