Graeme Hughes is to be officially appointed on 1 March, 2020, as the Senior Coroner for South Wales Central, which covers Rhondda Cynon Taf and surrounding areas.
The appointment of Mr Hughes, who takes over from his predecessor Andrew Barkley, has the consent of the Chief Coroner and Lord Chancellor. Mr Hughes took up the post of Acting Senior Coroner on 1 April, 2019.
Councillor Maureen Webber, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Council Business, with responsibility for Coroners Service, said: “We are delighted with the appointment of Graeme Hughes as the Senior Coroner for South Wales Central.
“Mr Hughes is highly respected within his profession and is also a highly respected resident of Rhondda Cynon Taf. We wish him well in his new role.”
Mr Hughes, of Aberdare, was previously a founding partner of established law firm Hughes Jenkins Solicitors, with branches in both Aberdare and Blackwood.
Graeme Hughes, the newly-appointed Senior Coroner for South Wales Central, said: “I am both honoured and delighted to be appointed as Senior Coroner for the South Wales Central Coronial Area.
“Together with my excellent team of Coroner’s, Coroners Officers and Administrative Staff, we will strive to ensure that all who come into contact with the service are treated with respect, courtesy and understanding.”

The South Wales Central Coroner’s Office is based in Courthouse Street, Pontypridd. The Coroner has a team of support staff whose duties include assisting in the preparation of forms and paperwork, arranging inquests and providing copies or reports and dealing with the public.
As of 1 March, 2020, Graeme Hughes officially becomes Her Majesty’s Senior Coroner for South Wales Central. The Assistant Coroners' for the South Wales Central Area are Dr Sarah-Jane Richards, Rachel Knight, David Regan, Ian Boyes, Nadim Bashir and Geraint Williams
The South Wales Central division covers Rhondda Cynon Taf, Cardiff, Bridgend, Powys, Vale of Glamorgan and Merthyr Tydfil.
