Apprentice-scheme
The first phase of recruitment for Rhondda Cynon Taf Council's award-winning apprenticeship scheme is now open to applicants.

Each of the apprentice opportunities are paid, fixed for two-years and offer the chance to secure both industry-recognised qualifications and essential vocational experience in a chosen field.

Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, changes have been made to the recruitment process for both of this year’s Apprenticeship and Graduate Schemes. A three phase approach will be taken and the first phase, which is now open, will focus on the recruitment of 14 apprentices.

The roles available in the first phase of recruitment are:

  • Apprentice Accountancy Assistant
  • Apprentice Building Surveyor
  • Apprentice Civil Engineering Technician x2
  • Apprentice Digital Assistant
  • Apprentice Electrical Engineering Building Services Assistant
  • Apprentice Horticultural Assistant x3
  • Apprentice ICT Assistant x3
  • Apprentice Mechanic
  • Apprentice Street Lighting Technician

RCT Council is currently working on ways to conduct the necessary assessments and interviews in the safest possible way for applicants and staff, and will adhere to all public health guidance and regulations throughout the recruitment process.

The second phase, which opens in the Summer, will focus on recruitment for 15 Graduate posts, and the third phase, which opens in the Autumn, will focus on recruitment for a further 20 Apprenticeship posts. Information about roles available in phases two and three will be available closer to their openings.

Councillor Maureen Webber, Deputy Leader said: “With so much uncertainty at the moment, we are determined to ensure that our recruitment of apprentices and graduates will continue to take place.

“As we have seen during this pandemic, the work that Council staff undertake is critical to ensuring our communities are kept safe and vital services continue to be accessible to residents.

“Our apprentices and graduates are a key part of our organisation, they are the ones who develop their skills and knowledge within our communities to best serve their needs – they are the ones who progress within our organisation to provide the services which we all rely upon.

“The Council’s Apprenticeship and Graduate programmes have proven to be hugely successful, with this year’s announcement that 49 opportunities are to be created also meaning that we will have shortly delivered on our commitment to provide at least 150 apprentice and graduate posts through the two schemes over the course of this Council term.

“I hope that the essential work our staff do, which has been highlighted over this pandemic, will inspire people to consider working for Rhondda Cynon Taf Council.”

Since 2017, 89 Apprentices and 40 Graduates have already benefitted from the training and development opportunities that form an integral part of the scheme, with the 2018 intake now approaching the end of their scheme and moving onto the start of successful careers.
