The Council are planning to consult on plans to build a new Welsh medium community school for Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg (YGG) Llyn y Forwyn.
The proposals will create additional Welsh medium capacity within the Rhondda Fach and consultation will commence early in the New Year, following the completion of a site options appraisal which is currently underway.
The consultation will provide an opportunity for the community to have their say on their new school and the outcome will then inform Cabinet’s decision making.
County Borough Councillor Joy Rosser, Cabinet Member for Education & Inclusion Service said:
“The Council is committed to investing in the creation of a new 21st Century school for the pupils and staff of YGG Llyn y Forwyn.
“Following the completion of site appraisals, the Council will consult with the community around the development of a new community school, which will create a new modern learning environment for the future and will also aim to provide accessible facilities for use by the wider community.
“Equally important, this investment will create additional Welsh medium capacity within the Rhondda Fach and builds upon the significant investment already being delivered across the County Borough, to increase the availability of Welsh medium education in Rhondda Cynon Taf.
“The Council recognises that the facilities currently provided at the school are no longer fit for purpose, and our proposals will seek to ensure pupils have access to a modern state-of-the-art learning environment, alongside the provision of outdoor space to support the full range of curriculum activities.
“Through the consultation process we will seek to gain the views of residents, parents and pupils, as well as staff and governors on the details of these plans.
“This is another positive example of investment in Welsh medium education and the Rhondda Fach.”
Rhondda Cynon Taf continues to contribute to Welsh Government’s ambition to have 1 Million Welsh speakers across Wales by 2050 through the implementation of its Welsh in Education Strategic Plan and by improving facilities in Welsh medium settings through Council investment and Welsh Government grant funding.
