Pontypridd has been named as one of just 15 towns shortlisted from 398 applications submitted from across the length and breadth of the UK in the competition to become the first-ever UK Town of Culture in 2028!
The submission was a joint application by Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and Pontypridd Town Council, and it was supported by local cultural organisations, businesses and community partners.
Making it through to the final 15 represents the latest achievement for the town and wider area, building on the recent regeneration and investment in the town, the huge success of the National Eisteddfod in 2024, and a thriving programme of festivals, arts, music and cultural community events.
The bid celebrates Pontypridd’s unique story – from its industrial heritage and its proud role in inspiring the Welsh National Anthem, to its vibrant contemporary cultural scene and its renowned strong sense of community.
If successful, the Town of Culture programme would help create new opportunities for residents, support local artists and organisations, attract visitors, and showcase Pontypridd’s culture and creativity on a national stage.

To be shortlisted as one of the final 15 towns from almost 400 applications is a fantastic achievement for Pontypridd and a testament to the passion, creativity and resilience of our communities. This is a hugely exciting time for Pontypridd, which has seen a remarkable transformation over recent years through significant investment and regeneration schemes that have helped to revitalise key parts of the town, strengthened our cultural offer and renewed confidence in Pontypridd's future.
This bid is about building on that momentum and showcasing the very best of the town on a national stage.
