Birth Registrations

From Monday 29th June, you will be able to make an appointment to register the birth of a baby.

To minimise face-to-face contact at this time, the detail for the registration will be taken during a telephone appointment with the Registrar: telephone appointments will be in the morning.  The parent(s) will still be required to sign the register, so you will be requested to attend the Registrar Office on the afternoon of the same day.  Screens will be in position between you and the Registrar during this part of the process.

If you have been unable to register the birth due to COVID-19, we strongly recommend that you make an appointment to do so as soon as you are able.

Death Registrations

All death registrations will be carried out via telephone.  When the doctor attends the deceased and issues the Cause of Death form (MCCD), this will be sent electronically from the surgery or hospital to the Registrar Office.  When you contact us to book your telephone appointment, we will check that the MCCD has been received; if it has not, we will take your details and contact you back when it is received.

At the time and date of your appointment, we will contact you by telephone and take all the details necessary to register the bereavement. The official register page and certificates will record all information as provided by the informant. Please ensure you have the correct spellings prior to the appointment.

If you have requested the registration to be recorded bilingually, please have the correct English and Welsh spellings to hand.

NOTE: If you provide information at the time of registration that you later wish to correct, there will be a charge of up to £90 to complete any changes.

At the end of the telephone appointment, we will send you an e-mail to confirm registration has taken place and send the burial / cremation release form electronically to the Cemetery and Cremation Authority to permit this to go ahead.  You will be sent the death certificate by recorded delivery.  If you or your family are unwell at the time of death notification, we can take the relevant information from the Funeral Director you have appointed to act on your behalf.  Please note that during this time we are training more staff to ensure we can deal with you as quickly as possible; please bear with us during this period – if we ask to put you on hold to check something it is to ensure that you receive the service you deserve at this difficult time.

Weddings & Civil Partnership Ceremonies

From Monday 29th June, you will be able to get married or enter into a civil partnership at the Registrar Office.  Due to social distancing requirements, the maximum guest in the register office small room is 2, and maximum guests in Evan James Suite/ Civil Chamber 9; but this may be reduced depending on how you wish to enter the ceremony room.  You will also see additional safety measures in place, which will be explained to you when booking.

If you had previously moved your ceremony to a later date, but wish to reinstate it to the original date, or if you have an existing date for your ceremony but would like to defer until a time when social distancing may be more relaxed, please telephone the Office for a discussion, and we will endeavour to facilitate this.

If your plans had to change due to COVID-19, and you are required to give fresh Notice for your marriage or civil partnership, you will not be asked to pay again for this Notice.

If you had planned to marry or enter into a civil partnership in an Approved Premises, such as a hotel, with a Registrar in attendance, these premises are now permitted to host ceremonies, but are limited to up to 30 persons indoors. However, please be advised that decisions on ceremonies and attendance numbers may alter from one premises to another, due to the need to ensure social distancing and the size of the rooms available.  Any enquiry about your booked ceremony should start with contacting the Approved Premises.

We ask that anyone exhibiting COVID symptoms or who is isolating after a family member exhibited symptoms does not attend the ceremony; and that as you travel to the Registrar Office, attend the ceremony, and afterwards, you abide by social distancing and keep safe.
