Shop 'til you drop! A day in Llantrisant - the town on a hill

When someone mentions "shopping" in RCT, my thoughts turn to the huge Talbot Green retail parks which have a huge range of high street brand names and restaurant chains.

Look beyond (or in this case above) the recognised names to explore the surprising, enchanting range of independent shops and eateries in the hilltop town of Llantrisant.

Combined with an exploration of the town's fascinating history, a visit to the Castle ruins and a wander over the Common, Llantrisant is certainly a lovely way to while away the day.

Best for shopping:

Pink Zebra - This lovely boutique is packed with all things beautiful - for you, your home, your wardrobe or your loved ones.

Traditional Toys - The only toy shop in Wales to stock Stieff and Charlie Bears, Traditional Toys is a fantasyland of traditional and modern toys, childhood memories and imagination-stirrers.

With Love Flowers and Gifts - Enjoy a feast for your eyes and a treat for your loved ones in this enchanting shop. It has beautiful flowers for all occasions and gifts to go with them!

O'Sullivans Brasserie - has been serving visitors from far and wide for 25 years. It is famed for its meat dishes - including exotic kangaroo, python, zebra and beef - and mouthwatering desserts.

Castle Cafe - Its namesake is the Llantrisant Castle, once a magnificent structure in which the captured King Edward II was held before his execution and owner Joy Davies is famed for hearty Full English breakfasts, takeaway hot food and Sunday roasts.

The Bear Inn - Has been serving delicious hot meals, bar snacks and drinks for over 300 years. Must be good to be thriving for all those centuries!

The New Inn - Considered the oldest pub in Llantrisant, the New Inn has a mouthwatering menu including traditional favourites such as lasagne and steak, as well as themed burgers, tapas and steak nights.Picture28

Butcher's Arms Gallery and Coffee Shop - This is a great place to grab a hot drink and light snack, sandwich and cake - all of which is home made on site. Every corner and wall of this former coach house is packed with beautiful things to browse and buy, including Emma Bridgewater pottery.

Delicia Cakes and Teas - This is a new business which sells a huge range of teas from all over the world with many appealing blends. Make your tea in style with their lovely tea pots, cups and tableware.
