The Rhondda Fach Active Travel Route (the Route) is a new walking and cycling route between Maerdy and Stanleytown in the Rhondda Fach Valley. The Route will follow the alignment of the former railway line along the valley floor and will include links to local communities, shops, schools and leisure facilities.
The Route has been split into five phases. Phase 1 was completed in January 2024 and Phase 2 will be completed during Spring 2024. Phase 3 and 4, depending on funding availability, will be completed during Spring 2025 and Phase 5 during Spring 2026, again, depending on funding availability.
Phase 4 of the Route will provide a new shared use route along the former railway line between Maerdy and Tylorstown, with a link to Avon Street, Ferndale. It will start at the southern end of Phase 2, which is due to be completed this Spring, and end at the footbridge leading to the Rhondda Fach Leisure Centre.
