Residents will notice works to upgrade the drainage infrastructure across various streets in Mountain Ash from next week – using more than half-a-million-pound funding secured by the Council from Welsh Government.
The Council’s Streetcare Team will begin the scheme from Monday, August 14, along with the appointed sub-contractor Arch Services. The work is expected to last around six weeks in total, focusing on a number of locations – including Kingcraft Street, Gwernifor Street, Clas Gwernifor and Brynifor.
The scheme will deliver infrastructure upgrades to improve network capacity and alleviate the risk of flooding in heavy rainfall. The work will include installing a structural liner to the drainage network, renovating several existing manholes, installing a new manhole, and upgrading a culvert inlet structure.
Temporary traffic lights will be used locally where necessary to accommodate the work – moving from one location to another as the scheme progresses. The most significant of these will be at Clas Gwernifor’s junction with B4275 Miskin Road, where three-way traffic signals will be used when needed.
This scheme is included in the 2023/24 Highways and Transportation Capital Programme, in a list of Larger Individual Flood Alleviation Schemes requiring funding. Full funding has now been confirmed from Welsh Government.
Councillor Andrew Morgan OBE, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and Cabinet Member for Infrastructure and Investment, said: “I’m pleased the Council has secured major funding support from Welsh Government to carry out important drainage improvements across several residential streets in Mountain Ash. It’s now been confirmed that the work will start on August 14, to be completed over the next six weeks, before the winter season arrives.
“Improving drainage infrastructure and delivering targeted flood alleviation work continues to be a priority, in response to the threat of Climate Change – and we continue to welcome Welsh Government’s support in this area.
“The Council consistently benefits from Welsh Government support for land drainage and flood risk improvements, which provides 85% match-funding. More than £3.82m has also been secured from the Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management programme, and £1.003m via the Small Scale Works Grant programme, for 2023 – while our own Capital Programme, agreed in March 2023, allocates £750,000 for Drainage/Flood Risk improvements for this year.
