A NEW interactive GAME has been officially launched by Rhondda Cynon Taf Council at the Alun Maddox Visitors Centre this Recycle Week.
Maerdy Primary School children have been playing and testing out the brand-new GAME which aims to help us all ‘UP Our Recycling GAME’ for RCT.
The new game is now available for anyone to test their recycling knowledge and discover what can and can’t be recycled and where each item needs to be placed – visit www.rctcbc.gov.uk/RecyclingGameOn.
The learners who were visiting the centre as part of their schools Eco-Council session, have raised the challenge on the scoreboard – and they are certainly a big act for anyone else to follow!
Can you ‘UP YOUR RECYCLING GAME’ enough to beat them?
The GAME is the latest part of the Council’s recycling campaign which supports the recent changes and aims to help residents recycle as much as they can so that we can reduce the Council’s carbon footprint and bring us closer to hitting the Welsh Government recycling target of 70% by 2024/25 – ‘Let’s Hit the TARGET!’.
In Rhondda Cynon Taf we are taking MIGHTY actions to recycle and fight against climate change. In July this year the Council changed its black bag and wheeled bin collections to three-weekly in a bid to increase recycling rates and reduce carbon emissions! So far, the early recycling rates for dry and food are all on the up and overall black bag waste is going down – which means that residents are taking up the challenge ‘Let’s UP Our Recycling GAME’ and ‘Let’s Hit the TARGET! If we all continue our MIGHTY efforts, then RCT is back on the winning recycling track!
The Council also introduced sustainable and reusable green sacks for green waste collections in November 2021 and this has helped the Council to reduce its overall plastic usage by around 3 million clear bags annually.
Councillor Ann Crimmings, who is Cabinet Member for the Environment at RCT Council attended the Alun Maddox Visitors Centre alongside the children to officially launch the new GAME and see first-hand how the children enjoyed taking up the new challenge.
Councillor Ann Crimmings, Cabinet Member for Environment and Leisure, said:
“The launch of the new GAME helps us all to discover the rules, the cant’s, can’s and where’s of recycling, in a fun and engaging way, that the whole family can be involved in together – as we all have a part in play in recycling and climate change. I know I was surprised by some of the answers the first time – but am proud to say I got full marks and a printable certificate to prove it! I would like to thank the children from Maerdy Primary School for helping to launch the new GAME and it was wonderful to see them playing it and getting so many answers correct – the score has now been set very high!
“When it comes to recycling Knowledge is power and by knowing what and where items should be recycled helps us to reduce contamination and increase overall recycling rates. In RCT we do our best to make recycling easy and accessible for all – with a simple one bag system for dry recyclables. Our Community Recycling Centres are situated to within a few miles of each resident and are open 7 days a week, even bank holidays.
“I am so proud of our continuing recycling efforts, but there is still more we can do. We know our residents care about climate change and want to do all they can to make Wales and Rhondda Cynon Taf a cleaner and greener place. Together we can help to get Wales to number one and protect the planet by recycling more of the right things and reducing contamination every time.”
