Our teams in Catering Services are crucial to the daily operation of schools across the borough and consist of a variety of roles, which are listed below.
We strive to deliver a friendly and welcoming service, whilst providing healthy meals made using fresh and local produce, to the future generations of RCT.

Working hours are based on working Monday to Friday, term-time only, and vary according to the role and site. For example, Breakfast Club Staff are required before 9.00am, whilst General Kitchen Assistants are required mid-morning/lunchtime. We also aim to place you in your nearest school to ensure that transport is not an issue. You will be fully supported to complete Food Safety/Health and Safety training and where required you will be provided with a uniform.
Alongside contracted working hour positions, we also have casual roles available which enable you to enjoy the flexibility of casual work with Council employment benefits, which are outlined below.

Routes into Catering Roles, Training and Progression
There are opportunities within Catering Services for personal development and progression. We provide full training and offer a step-up programme to gain more experience. For example, if a General Kitchen Assistant would like to become an Assistant Cook; on the job training can be provided, along with any relevant training courses needed to undertake the role. We work closely with Coleg Y Cymoedd and offer NVQ’s in Hospitality and Catering.
Attributes needed to be successful in a Catering role are dedication and reliability, good communication and inter-personal skills, knowledge of food safety and hygiene processes and the ability to work within a busy team.
Apprenticeship Scheme
There are opportunities to join the central catering team as an apprentice to provide administrative support to the school catering and training teams, undertaking a varied and interesting role. Find more information on the Council's Apprenticeship Scheme.
