Brook Street Bridge Replacement - Construction Phase

Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council is seeking to award a contract for the demolition of the existing bridge and the design and construction of a replacement footbridge at Brook Street Ystrad Rhondda. The Design of the bridge has been funded by this Authority and Welsh Government

The existing bridge which was built in 1933 is at the end of its design life and requires to be replaced by a structure that is fully compliant to current standards. The bridge serves as an essential link between Nanty Gwyddon and Ystrad and provides the only wheelchair / push chair access to both platforms of the adjacent station.

The new footbridge will: -

  • enhance the connection between the two communities and the Rhondda Sports Centre and beyond
  • have a wider deck for the ramps from the Gelli Industrial Estate to the Leisure Centre that will comply with the Active Travel Act requirements and tie into the existing cycle route
  • be fully Disability Discrimination Act compliant.
  • force the closure of the northern entry onto the north bound railway station platform
  • at the southern entry onto the north bound platform, create a new improved at-grade access near the steps of the railway station footbridge ie the steps up to the platform will be removed and the ground level will be raised to meet the back of the platform level.

It is absolutely essential that this bridge is replaced in the next year but this Authority recognises that there is going to be a fair level of disruption to those who use this bridge and to those who live in close proximity. During the construction planning phase this autumn, the Contractor and this Authority will be exploring measures to mitigate these disruptions as much as possible.
