Ten-year anniversary of FREE festive parking in our town centres

Free parking ENG

The Council’s FREE festive parking initiative in Aberdare and Pontypridd, from 10am each day in December, will be returning for a tenth consecutive year in 2023 – as we encourage residents to Shop Local this Christmas.

Once again, parking charges in Council car parks within the two towns will not apply after 10am each day for the whole month of December – from Friday, December 1, to Sunday, December 31 inclusive. The offer is intended to help encourage residents to do as much of their Christmas shopping locally as possible, which would provide a boost to our fantastic town centre traders this time of year.

This year’s parking initiative is running alongside a £1 maximum fare for all bus journeys that begin and end within Rhondda Cynon Taf. Announced recently, the offer runs across all bus operators and will apply from the first to the last journey each day in December 2023. Find out more here.

In Aberdare, the FREE parking applies to car parks at Crown Buildings, Green Street, Library, Duke Street, High Street, Nant Row, Rock Grounds and the Ynys. In Pontypridd, free parking applies to Gas Road, Goods Yard (Council-owned section only), Millfield, Berw Road, Sardis Road and Catherine Street car parks.

Please note that Library, Green Street, Duke Street and High Street car parks in Aberdare, and Gas Road car park in Pontypridd, are all short-stay – for a maximum period of four hours. Town centre visitors are also reminded that if you park before 10am each day you must display a ticket up until 10am only.

Councillor Andrew Morgan OBE, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and Cabinet Member for Infrastructure and Investment, said: “This is the tenth consecutive year that free parking has been introduced across Rhondda Cynon Taf for the entire month of December – as once again in 2023 we will waive all regular charges from 10am each day in Aberdare and Pontypridd.

“We’re asking residents to continue to support our retail areas, explore the wide variety of products and services that local traders offer, and join in with the festivities across our town centres this time of year. It is also hoped that the month-long free parking offer in Aberdare and Pontypridd will help residents in some small way with the Cost of Living remaining very high.

“For the first time this year, we’re also introducing a £1 maximum fare for all local bus journeys in December within the Rhondda Cynon Taf boundary. So whether residents are planning to catch the bus or use our car parks to Shop Local this Christmas, the overall cost of their journey will be reduced.”
