The Council has provided a progress update on the construction phase of the new extra care housing scheme in Porth.
Working jointly with Linc Cymru, the exciting scheme will bring the former Dan y Mynydd Care Home site back into use by constructing a modern four-storey development containing 60 extra care apartments for older people, with communal facilities including a dining area, hair salon, activity room, day centre, offices and car parking.
Contractor Intelle Construction is currently preparing the building’s concrete foundations and associated drainage infrastructure.
Having reprofiled the embankment for soiling nailing work, this activity is now underway and will continue over the coming weeks. Strip foundations for the building’s eastern wing will also start during this period.
Once the soil nailing is complete, the installation of a gabion basket retaining structure will proceed – enabling the remaining strip foundations to be constructed, and the drainage progressed.
The image shows some of the contractor’s site activity in recent weeks, after the construction phase restarted on site in February 2024.
The scheme will contribute towards a planned investment in extra care for Rhondda Cynon Taf, to help more older people live as independently as possible with support for their assessed needs.
The Porth development is due for completion in autumn 2025 and follows the most-recent schemes delivered in recent years at Graig (Cwrt yr Orsaf) and Aberaman (Maesyffynnon).
