Additional Social Care Payment

The additional payment for social care is specifically aligned to the introduction of the real living wage and forms part of Welsh Government’s commitment to future improvements in professional development for registered care staff in care homes and domiciliary.

On 10 February 2022 the Deputy Minister for Social Services announced an additional payment for social care staff of £1,498 per person: Written Statement: Social care additional payment aligned to the real living wage (10 February 2022) | GOV.WALES

This amount covers the basic rate of tax and national insurance contributions and after deductions most people will receive £1,000.

The payment will be made to social care staff who were employed in an eligible role* at 31 March 2022 and those that started in an eligible role between 01 April 2022 and 30 June 2022*. Terms & Conditions apply

If you are employed within the Social Care Sector and believe you are eligible to claim this payment then please contact your employer. Your employer will determine your eligibility and you must complete an application form and submit to your employer.

If you are employed as a Personal Assistant through a Direct Payment Scheme, again you MUST complete an application and return to your employer who will make the claim to the Local Authority.

How the scheme works

Local authorities will issue claim forms to social care employers. Employers will identify and distribute application forms to all staff they deem eligible. Application forms will not be made available by any other means. Individuals should raise any concerns they have about any aspect of the process with their employer/former employer who should bring this to the attention of the local authority.

Appeals Process

If you have been deemed ineligible for the payment but you feel that you meet the eligibility criteria to receive this payment then you are able to make a reconsideration request via an appeals process. Please read the appeals process guidance which will explain how you can initiate the appeals process via the Council. 

If you believe you meet the criteria but you have been deemed ineligible for the payment by your employer then you can make a reconsideration request to the Council using the Welsh Government Additional payment scheme appeals form

Reconsideration requests should be emailed to RLWSCWP@rctcbc.gov.uk or posted to; Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council, Finance & Digital Services, Oldway House, Porth Street, Porth, Rhondda CF39 9ST.
