Telecare (needs assessed personal and home safety alarms)

Telecare is a range of alarm equipment that can help people live independently and safely at home. The equipment can detect potential risks such as falls, smoke, gas leaks, or people leaving their home unexpectedly, and can alert a family member, carer or monitoring service when help may be needed.

What telecare is

Telecare is a range of alarm equipment that can help people live independently and safely at home.  Telecare equipment can be provided free of charge following an assessment of your needs.

The alarm equipment is small and discreet. Some equipment is used by you, by pressing a button while other equipment works automatically, such as a fall detectors, door alarms or smoke alarms, and can send an alert to call help if needed. Telecare can offer peace of mind to you and to your families and carers.

Depending on your needs, telecare equipment can help reduce risks around the home by;

  • detecting falls
  • monitoring smoke, gas and carbon monoxide
  • helping people who experience memory difficulties
  • supporting people with mobility problems
  • providing reassurance for family members and carers

Who it is for

Telecare may be suitable if you:

  • want to continue living independently at home
  • have mobility difficulties or are at risk of falling
  • have memory problems, including dementia
  • have health conditions that could place you at increased risk in an emergency
  • care for someone and would benefit from extra reassurance

Telecare equipment available

The equipment availble to you will depend on your individual needs following an assessment, but can include;

  • A personal alarm pendant or wristband
  • Smoke and heat detectors
  • Carbon monoxide detectors
  • Gas detectors with automatic shut-off valves
  • Personal safety button for unexpected visitors
  • Fall detectors
  • Pressure mats
  • Light sensors
  • Property exit sensors
  • Flood detectors that alert when a tap has been left running
  • Epilepsy sensors
  • Carer pagers
  • Bed-wetting sensors

You can apply for Telecare by speaking to your social worker if you have one.

Once your equipment has been installed, you'll be shown how to use it and how to test it to check it's working correctly.
