How it works
If a person with a permanent disability lives at your property as their main home and the property has certain changes to meet their needs, your council tax bill can be reduced to a lower band.
This reduction is based on the property having adaptations made to the original rooms or extra facilities in place to meet the needs of a person with a permanent disability.
Your council tax bill will be reduced to the next band down and you will be charged the new lower rate. For example, a band D property would be charged at a band C rate. A band A property can also have its bill reduced further.
Who it is for (eligibility)
You are eligible for the reduction if a person with a permanent disability lives at your property as their main home and the property has certain changes to meet their needs.
The property must have been changed to meet their needs in one of the following ways:
- a room (other than a bathroom, kitchen or toilet) which is mainly used by the disabled person. For example a room used to store dialysis equipment.
- an additional bathroom that is essential for the disabled person
- an additional kitchen that is essential for the disabled person
- extra space inside the property for the use of a wheelchair
Who it is not for
Other adaptations and extra features do not qualify you for a reduction. This could include features such as:
- Hand rails
- Stair lifts
- Ramps
- Walk-in showers
