How it works
If you are the only person, aged 18 or over that lives in your propery and you meet the eligibility criteria detailed below, you will be receive a single persons council tax discount of 25%.
Who it is for (eligibility)
You are eligible for a discount if you are:
- the only adult in your home (aged 18 years or over),
- and, your home is your sole or main residence.
There are certain circumstances where a 25% discount may still be available. For example, where other adults living in the property are:
- full-time students or apprentices.
- suffering from a severe mental impairment.
- 18/19 years old and recently left education or you are still in receipt of child benefit for them.

Before you start
You'll need your council tax account number to make an application.
You must continue to pay your current Council Tax bill while the outcome of your application is decided.

You must inform us immediately if your circumstances change as it could affect your entitlement to a discount.

Single persons discount review
The Council is continually reviewing Council Tax single person discounts to make sure that residents only receive a reduction when they are entitled to it.
We use data matching to compare records and check that the discounts given are correct.
If you are receiving a discount but are no longer entitled to it, the discount will be removed. It may also be backdated based on the evidence available. Where appropriate, the Council may apply a financial penalty or take legal action if someone has not told us about a change in their circumstances.
If you receive a review letter or email
If you receive a single person discount review letter, you must tell us about your current circumstances so we can update our records.
The quickest and easiest way to complete your review is online. You will need your unique PIN, your Council Tax account number and your postcode. You can find these details on the letter or email we sent you.
