Stay safe
- Floodwater can be dirty and may hide dangers like sharp objects or open drains. Avoid touching it if possible.
Find somewhere to stay
- If your home is badly damaged, stay with family or friends.

- The Council or your insurance company for help finding a place to stay.

- The British Red Cross for help with transport, food, and other support.
Wait for the all-clear
- Do not go back home until the emergency services say it is safe.
- Check for damage to the building, electrical risks, and dirty water.
Record the damage
- Take photos or videos of any damage for insurance.
- Make a list of damaged items and their value.
Contact your insurer
- Tell your insurance company about the flood as soon as you can.
- Follow their steps to make a claim and send them any photos or documents they ask for.

Clean up safely
- Wash and disinfect your home, especially if the floodwater was dirty or contained sewage.
- Wear gloves and other protective clothing.

Get professional repairs
- Use experts to fix damage and make your home safe again.
- Don’t try DIY repairs unless you are sure you know what to do.
Prepare for the future
- Think about what worked well and what could be improved.
- Consider extra flood protection for your home such as flood gates.

- Flooding can affect your mental health as well as your home.
