Bandstand

In 1890, the original bandstand was built out of timber and was made of a platform without a roof. It was sited by the side of the lake and could accommodate up to 30 people.

The Bandstand

The issue was raised that the bandstand had been set up in the wrong place and it was requested for it to be moved. After considerations, the original request was refused and it was not until 1910, that the issue raised its head again.

The current octagonal bandstand with an ogee-shaped roof and iron railings around it was manufactured in 1910 by Phoenix Engineering Company and it was then recommended that it be sited on the island in the middle of the lake. It was officially opened on 29th June 1911 as part of the celebrations for King George V coronation and it was estimated that 15,000 people were present.

After many discussions concerning health and safety, it was later moved to its current location.
